It's also regional. For instance, you don't start see brick buildings like that west of, oh, Cincinnati or thereabouts. (I've driven or taken the train across the country many times, and I always smile when I start seeing that kind of brick architecture because it reminds me of my NY origins.) It's a very northeast/midlantic building style.
Having grown up in NY before living in the northwest and returning to the east, I understand. Folks on the east coast are so...provincial, in our way. *ducks return produce*
In the northeast, ya. :-) It's a very northeast/midlantic building style. You don't get brick architecture in areas prone to earthquakes or tornadoes, or peaked roofs in areas that don't get heavy snow. Having spent the last 20 years on the west coast before moving to DC for a job, I still keep looking at the brick buildings and thinking, "Aren't they worried about it falling down?"
Very! You get a kind of gradient in building style as you move west across the US. For example, I spent four years in St. Louis, which had an odd mish-mash of architectural styles. Some colonial, some Spanish, plenty of French influence too. And lots of brick buildings, even thought St. Louis gets both earthquakes and tornadoes (we had one of the former during my time there).
In the gif, there's almost not enough snow for it to be the DC area. I'm still sitting under 30+ inches.
