So, is there going to be (or is there currently) something on the Utah books making it illegal for a man to do anything that could potentially endanger the fetus, as well?

I've been begging for a law like this. It's gonna be struck down so fast it'll make heads spin.

If it does, then every single miscarriage would have to be treated like a murder investigation.

I think we need someone to actually pass and enforce something like this to show just how nutty the concept is. Colorado Springs is doing it for libertarianism, let Utah do it for the "FETUSES ARE PEOPLE TOO" mindset.

Stalin's russia and a few of the warsaw pact nations did it already - one made it mandatory for women to undergo state gynecological exams to ensure such things weren't hidden and the discovery of miscarriages were generally followed up by murder investigations.

"I know it's well-intentioned," Dayton said of the attempt to lift "reckless acts" from the bill, "but I don't think we want to go down the road of carefully defining the behavior of a woman."

...

My jaw just dropped. Like, actually dropped. We're passing a bill to criminalize behaviors that could endanger a fetus's life, but we aren't going down the road of carefully defining the behavior of a woman. Hey, Mormons, how are your public schools working?

And there's an effort in the South Carolina House to stop state health insurance payments for abortions for victims of rape and incest. Don't know if it will pass (pretty sure if it comes up for a vote, all the Democrats will vote against it), but the fact that it's even being brought up is a bit sickening.

This is the same state that, earlier this month, passed a law that allows women to listen to the heartbeats of their three week old fetuses before they get an abortion.

When it was pointed out to the sponsor of said bill that a three week old fetus is about a millimeter long and doesn't even have a heart, much less a heartbeat, he responded in classic Christian fashion with "there are arguments on both sides of the issue, duh, I eat poop."

Really. Follow the link. That's what he said.

In my state (Georgia), the woman HAS to listen to a heartbeat or see an image of the fetus before she has an abortion.

I'm confused. Was this somehow prevented by the evil evil abortion murderer doctors *before* the legislation?

It was prevented by cold, hard science before the legislation.

I meant looking at ultrasound images -- I'm pretty sure that the heartbeat part isn't going to be significantly impacted by the new legislation.

A pregnant woman isn't a person to these people. She is a babycarrier. A walking incubator.

Ah, the pro-lifers - protecting life from conception until birth - then they no longer give a damn.

Oh, I see.

Granted, it's not just Mormons living in Utah.

Don't be silly, it has nothing to do with Mormon Cult babies and the Mormon Cult's commandments to breed all the warriors for Christ that Christ is going to need to kill all the heathen non-cultists come The Apocalypse which will totally happen just as soon as the Mormon Cult can possibly arrange it.

No, no, no. TOTALLY a non-issue. Ignore that! Pay no attention to the deluded fucking cultists following the "prophecy" of a semiliterate professional conman.

What this is really about is that *women* are unimportant and have no rights, As God Intended. If God had intended for women to be considered people, He would have given them penises.

In Chile, women who miscarry must report it to the government so that their uteruses (uteri?) can be inspected for signs of abortion. Gynecologists who discover that women have been pregnant or find signs of abortion or miscarriage are required to report it to the police.

That's the company Utah wants to walk in.

I don't think we want to go down the road of thinking too hard about any of this really, knee jerk reactions on a case by case basis will be fine.
