I just like to be prepared for emergencies and self sufficient, but these nutters are all about high tailing it to their BOL and patrolling the perimeter every time Obama scratches his balls, lest they wind up in a FEMA deathcamp.
I wish this were hyperbole. =/

On the plus side, though, they're amusing to troll.

I try not to mock people whose views differ from mine, but I couldn't let this one drop:

I just read the "Ladies Section" on that link, ostensibly the place for women survivalists. One of the top posts is "Non-denominational polygamy in in a post-apocalyptic world".

Because, y'know, the top issue on a woman's mind during an apocalypse is joining a harem while Dr. Strangelove sorts out his mine gap.

Also: Read the sticky post "Why are some women opposed to breastfeeding" where a man rants about the lack of proper education in today's women.

I confess I'm a bit baffled about this man-fantasy of having a harem of obedient and humble wimminfolks.

I mean, if I had trained myself with all the crazy survivalist tricks, equipped myself with guns, knives and explosives, I would have a harem of subservient men for myself... ;)

Yep, much there is lolworthy.

Overpriced, certainly, Crazy- ABSOLUTELY! ... But why do you say they are bad? Are they spoiled?

They're not particularly *good*. The foods you'll get from those seeds are okay at best, because they're *cheap* seeds. The seeds also aren't particularly hardy or resistant.

OH! OK, so you recognize those plant breeds and, yeah- gotcha, OK.

So if they were sincere about wanting to plant a full ACRE of garden, they ought to head to the seed/gardening section of the local walmart or maybe the Burpees catalog instead? Might take a little more time, but probably more than worth it in the end.

I don't recognise all of them, but I recognise a couple, and a bunch of people people who've linked this *are* good gardeners and have explained further.

Oooh! Very cool. Have any links to those folks? I'm just about to start my tiny garden for later transplanting, and help is appreciated! :D

Any competent gardener or farmer will already have their own collection of vegetables that are adapted to their locality and conditions. And, skimming through the plant descriptions, I didn't see a single reference to disease and pest resistance - very important if you're growing your own food without artificial pesticides.
This is aimed straight at gullible urban people who don't know their brassica from their botryitis.

I was thinking that, too--I didn't see a single note about zones or soil requirements. If I'm a crazed survivalist in Minnesota, I need different seeds than in Georgia, damnit!

Well, maybe, but this company is not in the business of doing anything other than getting *them* what *they* need - which is $150 of your gullible crazed survivalist dollars.

While I'm all for getting crazy conservatives into gardening--since I believe on some level that gardening is good for the soul, and these people probably need all the help they can get--if you assume that these are just the basic heirloom seeds you can buy at Home Depot, retailing for $2 a packet (for a nice round number) rather than getting a wholesale lot of the suckers, and that they've got to make payments on the foil sealing machine, I'm still turning up about $100 profit per "seed bank."

And seeds are not just plug and play, damnit. There's a whole knowledge base you have to build up about what works in your climate and when to plant and I'm just seeing some idiot dropping seeds on bare dirt--the whole bunch, all at the same time--and wondering why he isn't getting carrots to feed his harem.

Any deranged survivalist worth their salt should have taken up the French intensive gardening method years ago (or if they can't bear the notion of doing anything with the word "French" in it, they could at least take up Square Foot Gardening, which is close enough. But since that requires peat moss, and that's an import, they oughta do it now, before civilization collapses and all.)

Wow. I've gotten my crop of seed catalogs for spring and every catalog so far has the breeds they're advertising to offer. And they offer them for a tenth of a price. On top of that, at least two catalogs are offering to have selected seeds "canned", a new thing where you buy seeds and have them packaged in a certain way that they can last up to ten years--I think that their 20-year claim is flat-out bullshit.
