No, seriously, that was Nick Fury's state reason for taking Sam "The Falcon" Wilson to Tunguska: He'd been cleared for three people, needed a tech genius, Pym was unreliable and Banner was still in solitary. And while his normal go-to guy was Stark, Stark is useless in a fight without the support crew.
I know, I have that trade paperback. One day Stark will pull his weak sister act at the wrong moment, and get capp4ed, that's why Fury has other double-brained freak of nature/techno-weirdo guys. And Sam travels light, knows how to use a gun.
But that's in Ultimates, because it's an ensemble piece, Stark is useless in a fight without the support crew, to provide them with excuses like that for introducing a new character, having a different dynamic.
In the Iron Man movies, he's primarily on his own, thus he needs to be more adaptable, more able to Iron Man up at any point.
See, I didn't find the Ultimate Galactus stuff that stupid. There are a few specific bits (the X men automatically attacking the Ultimates and visa versa, the X Men not checking if there's anything bar Psychic stuff going on), but the overall Ultimate Nightmare trade paperback wasn't too bad, IMHO.
