Remember that the protagonist was offered the opportunity to push the button and "you will receive a million dollars, and someone will die . . . someone you Don't Even Know."

The button was pushed. When the protagonist asked where the Vague Mysterious Gentleman was going with the box, he was told that "I'm going to offer someone else the opportunity. And it's someone you Don't Even Know."

AH! the vague- unknown threat that there's only ONE- one million dollar chunk, (Which I presume is not mentioned one way or the other?)- and the next person to press the button will- of course- cause YOUR death in return for it... which- by the same math I pointed out before- is NOT assured.

Yup- a twist on the Monkey's Paw, but a Monkey's Paw nonetheless.

Which means that hell yes I'd be tapping that button for ALL I could, to make sure that my friends and family NEVER had to worry about it, and to confuse the issue.

Heh. :) Pray you live in the Twilight Zone adaptation, then, and not the original short story.

Yeah, read the original in class... Junior High, I think?... and it gave me the screaming heebie-jeebies for a week!

Oh, that's much better, but I can see why they changed it; it wouldn't translate easily to TV.

Thanks! Now I have to look up the story.

*raises hand tentatively*

Uhm. That's the Twilight Zone version, not the original Matheson story.

What happened was that her husband died and she got the money as his insurance. She was in tears because Jesus, she did love the guy, and the last line of the story was
"My dear lady, do you really think you knew your husband?"
