You don't need Steam to purchase Steam games. All you need is your account name and password.

... which you can just have them reset and email to you, if you don't know it.

You have to download it via steam *to play*.

But you can *buy it* from any web browser.

I've just wasted 18 hours with Master of Magic from GOG. The best $5.99 I've used for a while. The downloadable bonuses are nice.

Heh. Master Of Magic is a great fun game, if a touch, uh, busted. Still, it's great to start with 13 White spellbooks, "Incarnation", cast it as the very first thing you do, and then just let Torin smash *everything else in the game* for you.

I admit, I haven't tried that tactic, but for a long while I had only the version where Jaer the Wind Mage's windwalking ability was bugged (not the spell, just the innate ability of the hero): you could pump up his speed to insane numbers with spells and magic items, and he'd walk units across the map like that.

Which was fun, too, because you could stack half of the heroes and run around in keeps, temples, nodes and dungeons to pick 'em clean way before anyone else.

I play MoM in a "complete dick" mode -- Planar Seal, no one comes to my plane, and guards at every light tower to block enemy movement. Slip units of mass destruction to the other side with a well-timed move (Detect Magic to see that they are in the middle of some long spell to cast, remove Planar Seal, move the blocking unit away, slip strike teams through and put the blocker back), and rampage all over the map.
