"Conspiracy theorists" are a classic example of the flip side of religion: an overactive *and creative* imagination; the inability to tell reality apart from a SOMEWHAT ORIGINAL work of fiction, as opposed to the religious inability to tell reality apart from a traditional work of fiction.

As such, they're usually a hilarious read. And then sometimes they take Mage: The Ascension as historical fact AND THEN, when called on it, integrate the existence of the game into the delusions.

COMEDY GOLD.

(Also, memo to [livejournal.com profile] slacktivist: When you've realised that the map doesn't match the territory, has never matched the territory, requires constant adjustments to make it come close to looking something like the territory, and even then you really have to get in there with scissors, tape, correcting fluid, and a sharpie to get something even *slightly* close to matching where you've been, let alone where you're going? That's a sign that *your map is garbage*. That's a sign that your map has never been, at all, an even slightly accurate depiction of the territory and rather than CONSTANTLY readjust it and blame yourself for the failure, the only sane response is to throw it out and start from scratch. And you yourself *have already come to* the conclusion that the map doesn't match, has never matched, and will never match without editing.)

That is fucking glorious.

Also, Clark's unending argument with people over which of them has the right idea about their imaginary friend is so dull.

It amuses me that he seems to have incorporated elements of both nWoD and oWoD there – the whole 'ascended masters' sounds like the silly Atlantean elements of Awakening.

It's idiots like these who make outsiders think that sane gamers like me are crazy fucks.

They're not even gamers. They don't even know what is a roleplaying game. They're paranoid nutters picking "facts" off whatever ersatz material they come across.

No no no.

These guys are the ones that make even the daftest gamer look sane.

Gamers know that the source material is source material, that they're playing in a fictional world. Some of them may believe it's based on our reality, or some actually existing alternate reality, but they do know it's a game.

This is comedy gold. Even when linking to a Wiki page clearly marking it as part of the Mage background, he's treating it as fully real. The Technocracy created the EU as part of their desire to take over the world.

Genius.

Yup, I found this one couple of weeks ago, and boggled over it for a good while and then just did what every reasonable person would do: post onward and let others point and laugh.

It's not really a map so much as the squiggles and circles one draws when describing countries to another person. "And this blob here represents Ireland, and this longer blob is Britain, and the area I'm talking about is roughly here if you can imagine a, you know, real map in your head."

Yes, but his still says "And you must never ever ever go here because there are DRAGONS here, this is not a metaphor or a joke or anything there are really real literally real dragons RIGHT HERE and they will totally eat you".... on places that everyone who isn't an idiot has been going *for centuries* without a problem.

He just needs to get more dots in Arete, and then it will all make sense.

Your aside to slacktivist reads like attack on science. Are beliefs only meaningful if they are immutable, unchangeable, and immune to rational reconsideration?

It seems very odd to me how often both sides of the debate over religion seem committed to the view that Christianity can only be a meaningful belief system when followed in the strictest, most fundamentalist manner.

Exactly the opposite - which is why his complete failure to re-examine his assumptions when they fail him, over and over, in every respect, annoys me.

In all fairness, the original version of Mage was blatantly ripping off pre-existing belief systems. This has been thoroughly fixed in the current edition though.

White Wolf games were all about that - but the specifics of the synthesis of contradictory systems in Mage, particularly, the Technocracy, were.... fairly close to unique.

I wouldn't call it ripping them off, they blended existing mythology to create the world. The whole thing behind the WoD is that it's our world but darker and a little twisted. It needs some real life in there for that.
