Crysis, the world's prettiest tech demo and also a really fun shooter up until the aliens show up and it turns into Doom (whee, I dodge while hitting it with 200 rockets in the generics before it dies) for the last 15% of the game, is half price today on Steam.

(And, really, even after the whole "gameplay goes largely to shit" part, it is REALLLLY pretty and the setpieces are truly awesomely epic)

Be warned: This game is EXTREMELY pretty. Awesomely so. You will get shot looking at all the awesome things if you're not careful. And also it will crush your graphics card into the dirt if you don't have a monster and want all The Pretty all at once because The Pretty is extremely processor intensive due to some... compromises during programming. Which is to say, they repeatedly optimised for THE PRETTY over THE PERFORMANCE, which is kind of like a compromise when you don't think about it.

Still, amazingly, awesomely pretty, and a VERY fun shooter for 90% of the game and a so-so AMAZING PRETTY shooter for the last 10%. If you like this kind of game at all and have a reasonably good machine ("good-to-excellent in November 2007" for reasonable Pretty), it is well worth your $15.

Hrm... I hate it when aliens show up in shoot-em-ups because it usually scares the bejesus out of me.

Mind you, it's on sale via amazon.com for about $10 second-hand...

Better hope that second-hand copy still has one of its 5 activation limits left.

Also what the fuck, Steam isn't enough DRM? The Steam version sticks you with SecuROM and activation limits anyway?

The Steam copy is exactly like the normal copy, just delivered at half price via download.

This I would consider doing...if I had ever gotten around to installing Windows on my MacbookPro

Crysis requires left *and* right clicks. You'd have to buy a new mouse.

Also? It would probably crush your machine. It's not terribly well programmed, and MacBook Pro's have mid-range *laptop*, which is to say, crappy, graphics hardware.

Good game, well worth 15 units of your foreign currency. And it still looks gorgeous even on slightly older hardware with settings on Medium.
