I meant "our White House belongs to 'We the People.'" You can make an argument that the electoral college system comes between the will of the People and its implementation, but somehow, I don't think that's the thrust of the sign. I doubt one in 10 Teabaggers could explain how the voting system in the US works.
So I am confused. Usually I can figure out what they're trying to say, but this one's got me baffled. Unless the point is that the Teabaggers are the majority? Kind of a "lurkers support me in email" thing?
Maybe they want us to go back to being British colonies, but she didn't know who the current Prime Minister was? they do seem to have an obsession with the revolutionary war, as a group ... I just always thought they were on the other side of it!
The British burned the White House! Well, it was the Canadians, but they were British at the time. Those who do not remember* history will provide a great of amusement for those of us who do.
*Or never learned.
Besides, the Teabaggers would have been Tories, to a person. Revolution involves both an opposition to the status quo and personal risk. Revolutionaries don't get to send other people's kids to die for the cause.
Wellllll.... hmmmmm..... 'Winston Churchill' is in 'quotes,' albeit the wrong kind, but I digress. She may mean an ex-President whom she thinks is like or nicknamed 'Winston Churchill' [sic].
AHA! A simple google search of "President most like Winston Churchill" revealed this: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/barackobama/4623148/Barack-Obama-sends-bust-of-Winston-Churchill-on-its-way-back-to-Britain.html
She wants the bust of Winston Churchill returned to the White House. It all makes sense now.
That could be it...because sending it back says that he's not interested in keeping something that W. accepted and especially since it was given to us after 9/11 and that makes it sacred or something. So it's another way he's letting the terrorists win.
Obama returned a loaned bronze of Churchill to us Limeys when he took office. Presumably that's what she means, though you 'never know' with 'quotation marks'.
It was British naval commander Sir George Cockburn, then rear admiral, who captured and burned Washington. (The Govt General of Canada wrote to the fleet in Bermuda and asked for help.)
(I know, I know, it's not important unless you're an Age of Sail history geek.)
I know they want the bust back, what I don't understand is why American Wingnuts have such a hard-on for Winston Churchill. They seem to think he's almost a nifty as George Washington.
It just seems weird coming from Americans, like Australians worshipping Charles de Gaulle or something.
My theory is they like recalling the good old days when we kicked the Nazis' asses, but they don't want to mention FDR because he was a *gasp* Democrat.
Related is the tendency to call the French, who funded and helped fight the American Revolution, cowards and pussies. Often while doffing one's cap to the Statue of Liberty, a gift from...
The subtext is: Non-whites, non-Christians, and Democratic voters don't count as "people." Only conservative, white Republicans (a.k.a. "real Americans") are people.
"Churchill and the Conservatives are also generally considered to have run a poor campaign in comparison to Labour; Churchill's statement that Attlee's programme would require a Gestapo-esque body to implement is considered to have been particularly poorly judged."
Nothing Tea Party-esque there (is that the first example of Godwinising in history?).
Note that Atlee's very successful programme included the establishment of the NHS and the welfare state... so it's possibly a very complex series of nested similes that links the bust of churchill to Obama via the 1945 election and Glenn Beck's Magical Truth Talking Blackboard of Passionate Sincerity, all of which that old lady has decided to express in the most inscrutable and incoherent way possible? Or possibly it's more simple than that and she just is is very upset at the outcome of the 1945 general election?
or (the most likely explanation) she possibly just misspelled "McCain/Palin", or "bush" or "Reagan" or who the fuck knows, but she accidentally misspelled their name as "Winston Churchill" on her sign because Poor Literacy is KEWL.
Not that that was an original idea by any means. Liberty cabbage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauerkraut) was coined in WWI, but at least we were actually at war with Germany.
