It makes enormous sense for the OED to go fully electronic; massive savings in production costs, better distribution model, making it searchable (and cross-indexed) adds hugely to its utility, and it's vastly more portable.

-- Steve'll kinda miss the dead-tree version... but since he wasn't going to buy a copy, he doesn't get to gripe about it.

According to annoyed posts by someone associated with the OED on the American Dialect Society mailing list, there has been no final decision. And I note that the person quoted said "Probably." (My prediction: there will be a Print On Demand version.)

It's my impression that The Telegraph is not as accurate a source as The Onion.

Correct.

During the expenses scandal last youer, they attacked a female MP for buying makeup with her own money.

Then did a picture spread of her as the "makeover queen" showing how she'd changed her appearance a lot over the last ten years.

She was 29 at the time. Find me anyone, of any gender, that hasn't changed their appearance since they left school at all then there's something wrong. Someone elected to public office? Is going to have smartened up a lot.

Really pissed me off. Sorry, tangential, but yes, Telegraph and reality never been known to go together. They were running stories about how happy Charles and Diana were right up until the divorce announcement.

The fact that it gets called the Torygraph should tell you how fair and balanced it is, and obviously, that has an impact on its journalistic quality.

The official word is that the next edition of the OED won't be ready for another decade or more, and the decision will be made then.

They may as well. It's not as if most people under, say, 25 have ever touched it...
