That part confuses the hell out of me. I mean, at least there's a sort-of explanation by way of research below, but how the hell did it turn into homophobia? All I can figure it a general internet "fag" got thrown around, but jeez!
being a lack man... i kinda expect this out of the republican party...and i'm not really too surprised/upset... i'm pissed that 2 black folks would dress up as "slaves" at a GOP event..... ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS??!?!!? get them out of the fucking gene pool....
Not that the whole thing isn't creepy as fuck-- but I learned something that I think is kind of neat.
Local CBS Affiliate actually does some journalism: "News19 made phone calls and started asking questions about the photos. It turns out the two people along with McConnell are Gullah entertainers who have performed at many Lowcountry Heritage Festivals."
I also can't tell if McConnell is wearing Union Blue or Confederate Gray. It looks very, very blue in that picture. If so, they may actually be referring to the First South Carolina Volunteers (i.e. the company that Glory was about).
Which means that the Republicans are engaging in some good old fashioned racism, but painting it in what they feel is an "acceptable" light, perhaps? The officers of the First South Carolina Volunteers were white like Matthew Broderick, and (again, according to Wikipedia, major caveats about using it as a primary source apply) Gullah men served in that company. So, these guys, who are paid historical actors, are there celebrating their heritage -- the old crusty white guys are there pretending that their heritage is something other than it is.
I dunno, I'm just throwing that out there. I'm white and originally from the South, so this kind of stuff makes me cringe with a terrible cringing. But I was also confused about why the two black men were there, and seemingly enjoying themselves, and that's the best sense I can make of it.
Ah, was not aware. Well, the Republicans are pretty much racist whether or not they're dressed up like racists. It's just, you know, the audacity to dress up like one...
