Wow.

Speaking as somebody who's needed vision correction for myopia since I was 12, this is awesome.

Sadly, it's too late for us. We've done fucked up our eyes - but our grandkids? Different story entirely.

Yeah, too bad for us. Still cool, though.

On balance, I find that the benefits of living in the future outweigh the drawbacks.

Myopics get all the fun surgeries and treatments. Let me know when they have a good fix for hyperopia, someone?

In about 10 years, shortsightedness could be cured through eye drops, says Dr Chris Hammond

I always get suspicious when I see scientists paraphrased - I'd bet good money that what he actually said came with some qualifiers and caveats that didn't make for a good story. As the article notes later on, this is one part of a system that probably involves several different genes interacting with biological factors.

Not to downplay it - I used to work with another group who were researching this sort of stuff, and it's a major find.

That's beautiful.

I kind of want to use it in library research classes as a teaching tool.

What's with all that "glasses are icky" crap in the article? I care about 1000 times more about not walking into walls in dim light than I do about the aesthetics of glasses.

Still...I would wear vanity frames even I got my vision fixed. I prefer the way my face looks with glasses. (With lenses with a slight prescription. You can always tell fake lenses from the reflection and it looks stupid.)

That wretched woman saying glasses "aren't sexy on women" . . . wtf??!? I like myself in glasses, and don't even own a pair of contacts. Hrmph!

I've always liked yourself in glasses, too :-) You suit them well.

It's very WTF. I find they draw attention to the eyes, and what's not sexy about that? But then, I'm not a magazine fashion director concerned with varnishing over any blemishes on my mannequins models...

Except the article points out that myopia is largely environmental - the genetics certainly don't help, but it's much more prevalent in the first-world countries (especially Asia) than anywhere else.

I like my specs anyway.
