"Really? Do I have to remind everyone what happened the last time we found intelligent life? Or the time before that? Or the time before that? Or the time before THAT?"

Stargate Universe had a really rocky second season start, but appears to be back on track.

I'm still on the fence, but I'm still watching.

The whole "Stargate Galactica" mindset was a little off-putting (I don't object to it, but it wasn't handled well at the start.. or middle), and I'd still want an actual motivation for Rush beyond "crazy Objectivist dude", but on the other hand the alien encounters are actually interesting.

I would have described him as Utilitarian rather than Objectivist.

Rush is messianic figure, in his own mind. He's the only person on board who REALLY understands what is happening, and whose genius is unappreciated.

In my illness-addled state I read that as "the only person on beard", which also seems to be the case in later episodes.

Rush is completely predictable -- whatever he does will be focused, laser-like, on fulfilling whatever objectives he wants fulfilled at any given time.

In this way, he is absolutely an Objectivist, in the truest sense of the word!

I always thought of him as your run-of-the-mill megalomaniac.

Given that they're focusing less on people I absolutely despise, I was bound to like it more, but yes, I'm enjoying this second half of this season.

I find Eli, Rush, and The Brody-ish Collective Of Lesser Scientists to be endlessly entertaining. The colonel, less so but he's solid.
Lieutenant Whatshisname and The Alien Girlfriend bore the crap out of me, Greer is hilariously fun to hate in small doses, and I think I've run out of characters by now, haven't I? Oh, wait, the boring medic of boring and the boring civilian overseer lady of boring.

But the latest episodes have been about the fun people, which means they've been more interesting.

Unfortunate that things have finally picked up just in time for the midseason break. Alas.
