I want an edition of 1984 translated entirely into Newspeak.

I would pay good money for this.

I believe Orwell said that the Newspeak translation of 1984 is, literally, one word: "Crimethink."

Indeed, that is the whole point of Newspeak.

It's been a while since I read it. Do we have a sufficient describing/exampling of Newspeak to do it?

Newspeak is a deliberately impoverished language.

On the other hand, Gene Wolfe's "Loyal to the Group of Seventeen's Story" (chapter XI in The Citadel of the Autarch) is an impressive example of what can be done with impoverished language and a translator.

If this does what I think it does, you can do it yourself...

Yeah, that's kind of deliberately impossible unless you're willing to roll with [livejournal.com profile] kadath's suggestion of boiling it down to just one word. A transliteration into Newspeak is a tiny bit more possible, but still a pretty dubious proposition.

Yeah, I'm gonna follow the crowd and say that part of the point of Newspeak is that it doesn't support satire or political commentary or anything like that.

But the fact that it doesn't work is part of the point. Reducing it to a single word defeats the purpose, although it does make the point that newspeak has no place for narrative of that sort nicely.

Yes, that's the point of Newspeak. However, I suspect that Newspeak wouldn't succeed in this goal. Translating "1984" would illustrate this nicely.

How about Lol Speak?

I might find the imp of the perverse persuading me to do that.
