browser.tabs.animate
set to FALSE.

That is all.

(While I'm at it, anyone got a line on a simple, non-cluttered, plain-coloured, FF4-compatible skin or "persona"? My "make it look like FF2" one hasn't been converted to 4. And the default FF4 look is ugly.)

EDIT: In fact, I specifically want a way to make Firefox 4 looks like this:

Hard lines between toolbars. Tabs in a bar of their own. Each tab has a clear delimitation between it and the next tab, with a visible line between the non-active tabs and the tab contents. The beige-ish colour is a plus. Oh, and The Funniest Comic Ever is a bonus.

(Beware, when following that link, that it is one of the ONLY work-safe things on that website. And the splash warning "are you sure you want to go here?" site is marginal.)

What does setting it to false accomplish? Despite the little bit of business up top, having the animation doesn't seem to impact how fast tabs open or anything.

Also I honestly don't know if FF3 could do this, but you can right-click up there, hit Customize, and drag and drop icons around to fix the terrible layout decisions in default FF4. Can take tabs out of the title bar and restore the correct-style menu bar, too. If your complaint is color scheme, though, can't help you.

Isn't that the setting that keeps it from using up ass-loads of memory, even when FF isn't itself running?

No other browsers do web surfing right. Which is unfortunate, but means I will put up with it using more RAM than it "should" while still using an insignificant amount of RAM, because the alternative is a crappy browsing experience.

It turns the tab animations off. They are annoying. Things that open should not swoop or slide or zoom, they should appear and disappear. If the animation is slow enough that I can see it, it is wasting time where things could have already been in their final location for me to start aiming the mouse at them.

(My complaint about the "persona" is that I want a clearer definition of buttons and tabs. Harder edges between them. A pixel or two more space on all sides of the labels. And NO fucking stupid images on top of my address bar, tab bar, etc, obscuring the stuff that's actually useful.)

I guess I'm really not sure what you're after with the persona. This is what the top of my Firefox looks like (http://i.imgur.com/TNyca.png), I'm not sure what things aren't particularly delineated except maybe back/forward.

Though, that's with me trying the tabs on top thing, which seems to be working okay and saving space. If I decide against it, I can change it back to this (http://i.imgur.com/UfyBh.png).

This is what I see (with my Bookmarks toolbar redacted):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v620/theweaselking/main6/0c388fd0.jpg

Which, unfortunately, doesn't show the multiple-tab problem all that well. It was a bad screenshot.

What I want:
#1: a teeny little border around my bookmarks toolbar items, like the kind of thing that appears when I hover over them
#2: A darker, or at least more visually distinct, border around the edges of my tabs
#3: A little more space INSIDE the tabs before the icons and text begin. Not much, just a LITTLE BIT to, if nothing else, more clearley separate the tabs from the window contents.

(What I don't want: That ugly image in behind your browser bar. The one that makes it harder to see menu items and tabs.)

Oh, that's not a Firefox thing, that's a Windows 7 thing, part of Aero that can be turned off.

#1: It totally can be turned off. Try System -> Advanced -> Visual Effects.
#2: No, that's the kind of thing Firefox Personas put in. And I do not want it. I want more contrast and better distinction of my tabs and buttons, but no images and crap.

#1: I said "can".
#2: Ah. I guess this seems pretty high-contrast and distinct, to me (http://i.imgur.com/eVB9Z.png).

That does! Perhaps it is my grey background "behind the tabs" that is the problem.

When I installed FF4, my long, sordid history of firefox mods finally became unmanageable. I had to do a clean install to get it working right.

Still waiting for SearchWP to update to FF4. NTT let it work, but it doesn't play well with searchsync anymore.

I have added a screenshot of what I want it to look like, through the expedient of loading up what it looked like before. If I can't get this, I will adjust, but, dammit, THIS IS WHAT WORKED.

I normally don't use the bookmarks toolbar, but setting aside the whole "I have dark, busy stuff in the background that because of Aero can be vaguely said to obscure the title bar" thing, how does this look (http://i.imgur.com/BfRlu.png)?

Oh god there's a Let's Play Oblivion thread?

Three thousand posts later, they'll probably be out of the first dungeon!

That one's actually one that a guy does on his site. When he updates. Which is infrequent. (http://www.chocolatehammer.org/?cat=273)

While nicely separating your tabs from your window, your bookmarks toolbar still bleeds into the address bar and the content.

I have included a screenshot of what I want

So ... a line between them? That's really the only difference I see.

The line, the old-school buttons, the coloured buttons.

While I'm at it: The Status Bar, which previously had all my add-on icons, has been replaced with the Add-On Bar, with status messages appearing in-window ABOVE it, which is annoying. And the add-on bar has an X to close it that I can't get rid of or lock, which is annoying. I want that gone, too.

Good luck with your technical issue.

I am glad for the link to that bit of Oglaf - that particular one is great on its own merits, but is also my go-to example for "a joke that only works in comics."
