Since Firefox 5, when I close a tab there is a pause, then the remaining tabs resize themselves to fit my tab bar.

(Yes, I *do* almost always have a full tab bar. Why?)

It didn't do this before -the resize was instantaneous, no delay. The delay is ANNOYING, because I've just closed a tab, which means I'm either looking at the tab bar (and it MOVES ON ME) or I'm not (and SOMETHING ON MY SCREEN IS MOVING AND DEMANDING MY ATTENTION AAAAAAGH)

Suggestions?

Odd, I don't get that.

But my setting are almost certainly unusual, as I use TabMixPlus, and have it set to Multi-Row. But even if I have only one row (unusual) and it resizes after I close a tab, that resize is darn near instantaneous, and I'm able to view the next tab while it happens.

You could try turning on multi-row tabs and see if you find that more usable.

Huh. I use TabMixPlus and have it set to Multi-row, and I've been noticing the behaviour he's describing with Firefox 4.0.1, although only when Firefox is running slowly anyway.

(Mind, I keep Firefox open for weeks at a time with hundreds of tabs in multiple windows, and its process is currently using 824,908KB of memory, and I understand this is somewhat unusual? I always figured it was a case of a near-instantaneous animation--something that's normally done before I even move my mouse away from the tab, if I used my mouse to close the tab, taking noticeable seconds due to a laggy program.)

Possibly could be that I've turned off the animate tabs setting as well (see comment further down).

But hard to tell.

I currently have a mere 708MB of memory being taken up by Firefox, and I bow in your general direction :->

Yes, I've noticed that. I also spend half of my career telling UI designers not to build laggy interfaces that do that.

Pauses are the mark of significance, and it's not to be used spuriously or be wasted. In humour, in drama and in life, timing is everything.

This may not an intentional design feature :D

Though UI peeps can get a tad caught up in pretty, or the packing in of 'features'.

It *is* fun to watch how much difference timing can make on *anything*.

I have. And I even checked to make sure they were STILL off, today.

Aaah - it turns out I have, indeed, gone into about:config found browser.tabs.animate and set it to false at some point.

I was getting a delay that I assumed was normal lag, but having now gone into about:config and turning off the animate flag mentioned above got rid of that. Using Tab Utilities and Tree Style Tab.

i have been annoyed by this as well. after tweeking, it still occurs when there are several tabs beyond a full screen width (a few 'off screen' as it were).

i wonder if it is an issue within the core rendering engine ... taking time to refresh, garbage collect, or something ...
