I seem to recall an argument a while back on an otherwise reasonable person's LJ where they were bitching about having to wear a seatbelt in the back of a car. It boggles the mind, it does.
I am equally puzzled by the number of cyclists who refuse to wear helmets, including the somewhat awkward argument that you're more likely to get a head injury walking.
I know of very few people who can walk at 20mph amongst heavy traffic.
To be fair, a helmet's effectiveness falls off above speeds around 20KPH. At highway speeds, the helmet is the difference between death and a life as a quadriplegic. If helmet-nonwearers were willing to sign a sort of living will ("I want to die outright and not be on life support"), I wouldn't have much problem with it.
