Man is arrested, loses job, and has car stolen, for cashing a Chase cheque at a Chase branch, while black.

Short version: Chase owes him $8500, sends him a perfectly real cheque. He comes in to cash it, provides ID, and is arrested for "fraud" because no black man could possibly have that kind of money. When Chase discovers their error, they don't actually call anyone on duty at the police station, so he spends a long weekend in jail, and loses his job for not showing up. His car is towed and then auctioned off because the cheque is "evidence" and he doesn't have the money to pay the impound fees without it.

I suspect (and hope), the next check they send is going to have a lot more zeroes on it..

At which point they get him sent to jail for several years and foreclose on his house.

More specifically, the teller left a voice mail on the detective's VMS. Because yeah, that's nothing too urgent, that you got a man arrested pointlessly, right?

I hope he gets a good settlement. Especially now that Chase has been publicly embarrassed.

But, you know, I lived in WA state...Auburn isn't the seat of liberality in Western Washington, but it's not the kind of place where you expect to get arrested for breathing while being black, either.

Chase has outright robbed several homeowners I know of thousands of dollars. Did you know it was perfectly legal for them to refuse to cash a mortgage payment despite the fact that it puts a previously up to date mortgage in default?

The picture showing how I shared my feelings about Chase seem prescient about now.

Well, it appears they have kissed and made up. I hope the man got a bundle.

I don't understand why Chase took the money out of his account and sent him a check.

It was already in his fucking account, assholes!

No, actually. He had no account with Chase - he HAD one, in the past, but Chase closed it because he bounced cheques. So when his First Time Homebuyer Rebate arrived by "direct deposit" to an account that Chase had closed, they took out the money they were still owed, and wrote him a cheque for the rest.
