I suppose I should actually get on the Ice & Fire bandwagon one of these days.
I read the first one awhile ago, and it didn't really grab me. From what I recall, it felt like the first 1/4 of four different books interleaved. Two of which were decent, 1 middling and 1 tosh.
I understand it gets better though, and keep meaning to come back to the series. One of these days...
I found it hard to get into at first; I picked up the first book and put it down again, and then came back a couple of months later. Started over and no trouble getting into it.
Since I made this comment, I've caught up and am now cursing the inability of GRRM to clone himself and use a hive mind to smith words faster.
Watching the TV show actually helps to get into the books. The books provide a parade of characters and it's far easier to "get" a character on TV, which I can take back with me to the books so the constant hopping between characters becomes less taxing.
