So, the proof that Jon is Eddard's son is pretty strong in this book. He continues to force his view point down the throats of an organization made up of thieves, rapists and murderers. He only makes a cursory attempt to explain the why of it, pushing hard on the issue of the oath they take and that they have to do their duty.
... and then promptly throws that aside for reasons that are somewhat nebulous at best (Boltons word / Cersei's word are about equivalent), and then things go horribly, horribly wrong for him.
Of course he's "Eddard's son." He has been brought up by Eddard and looked upon him as his father his entire life, and he doesn't know anything else about anything. It's nature vs. nurture and nurture, explicitly, won in his attitudes. (He still has the nature part too. From Mom.)
Still, I'd say you have a point, but my supporting evidence is the shoehorning in newly-discovered presence of Prince Aegon. We need Targaryen blood to be a head of the dragon? There he is. I didn't like that.
(Also, apparently there's a lower limit on the amount of Targaryen blood the dragons will bow to. Ow, Quentyn.)
I'd argue that basically anyone who isn't at least 50% warg / magical need not apply for the position of dragon rider. At the very least one also probably wants to approach them one at a time, since even if the one finds you very impressive that is no guarantee the other won't heatedly express his negative opinion.
That's the problem I see our iron friend facing, if the horn binds one dragon (and not the other two) then he may find himself baked.
