Short version: WHO?

If you want the "rockstar dead" response, doesn't that mean you have to be a rock star first? Or at least SOMETHING CLOSE to "relevant", first? Sheesh.

I wish people would admit the reason they've noticed her death is the subject matter of her one hit single made it the last in a series of punchlines made flesh.

If "Tears Dry on Their Own" had topped the charts, right now it would be "Huh, too bad."

I had actually forgotten about her existence entirely until now.

It's knocking the Norway massacre out of the news. Disgusting really.

"... doesn't that mean you have to be a rock star first?"

Well, I say no, no, no.

And if not for Rock Band 3, I probably never would've heard a single song she'd done.

Not my thing, but she was a great singer and a great songwriter.

I know her only from the addiction jokes on the media. And it will stay that way.

Fuck that.

Amy Winehouse is dead.

Two days ago a gunman in Norway opened fire on a youth camp and killed somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 teens and young adults.

As of today, even though an official peace treaty has been signed, over 500 civilians have been massacred in the Ivory Coast.

One of these stories didn't even *make* the goddamn news cycle.

Sure!

War over but massacres continue in Ivory Coast

By RUKMINI CALLIMACHI, Associated Press – 2 days ago

ON THE BANKS OF THE CAVALLY RIVER, Ivory Coast — ON THE BANKS OF THE CAVALLY RIVER, Ivory Coast (AP) — The inauguration of Ivory Coast's new president played out before a crowd of tens of thousands. Women wore dresses printed with his portrait. World leaders flew in for the day in a show of international support.

The massacre by the president's men started the day after, at dinnertime.

The soldiers burst into a clearing on the banks of the river here, opening fire with a machine gun mounted on a wheelbarrow. The dozens of families that had sought refuge in this distant spot dropped their plates of food and kicked over pots as they ran.

By the time the soldiers were finished, it was morning and as many as 47 people were dead. The lucky ones drowned in the river.

More at the link. That "two days ago" is accurate as of today; I just copy pasted from a link I Googled.

And something like 30,000 people die a day from starvation. What is this, some kind of I'm-better-than-you-at-not-caring race?

First of all, if you are a canadian who loved metallica's latest album you should not be too surprised that you have never heard of a british R&B singer who hasn't performed in a few years due to Murdoch Press* related mental health issues. But she was really well known and loved among the american and british musical community, so the media has something of a quotation glut from other musicians that are more well known in the US, which is pushing this into prominence beyond what it strictly would get given her almost complete anonymity in the US.

* All news stories from now until the end of days will loop back around to the myriad evils of the murdochs' media empire, even the oslo tragedy has had issues with Sky News cameramen getting a bit too pushy in making tragedy porn out of the shooting and FOX's bullshit about how the tragedy sends a clear message to yuroopeans about how they need to take stern measures to get their muslim population under control.

A point of order: Metallica's latest album was completely terrible, for the same reasons that the previous two were unlistenable - no bass.

Objection; I fail to see how the addition of carnivorous fish would have improved that album.

That I still haven't heard her music and initially thought she was either a reality tv "star" or someone who was on one of those Simon Cowell pieces of crap.

I'd not knowingly heard her stuff before, but people started linking to stuff on Youtube, and I tried a bit.

Not my sort of thing but I had actually heard a lot of it, she was a phenomenal singer, appears to have been a fairly good songwriter and I will now listen to more.
