Google is probably trying to keep the riffraff out, starting with people who can't spell. Since their search engine already insists on correcting your spelling, it follows that they'd want their social club to consist exclusively of spelling bee wizards.

They banned Arianna Huffington, too. For the same reason.

Of course, those two had Google employees *falling all over themselves* to fix it immediately. Normal people who are suspended for their real names looking "suspicious" get a manual review "eventually".

A friend of mine is named Steve Wozniak. Got banned from Google+. Tried to work with them to get it fixed, but got nowhere until a Google employee on a message board he frequents looked into it.

Whoops!
