Eh. See I'd say that Mal = Han only a little more than Dumbledore = Gandalf. There's not much to it, IMHO. Mal is a captain in ways that Han isn't, he's a soldier, he's a grumpy browncoat; there's enough space there IMHO.

And the character that the quote is from is very different to both Mal and Han, yet the words fit, just like Yoda is quite different to Dumbledore and Gandalf.

This may be a background knowledge thing, but you know Han was a pilot in the imperial navy and those red stripes on his trousers are a bravery award, right?

And yeah, never seen the film the quote's from, actually looked it up after I made the comment as it occured I hadn't factored that at all.

A former military officer now operating as a smuggler in an out-of-date transport ship with secret compartments and a very shady past, linked to major figures in the criminal underworld and frequently wanted by the authorities? Even some of hte dialogue is an obvious *cough*homage*cough* (although don't get me to quote it as I don't recall which bits got my attention as such).

And I see Ben/Obi Wan as much closer to the Dumbledore/Gandalf analogue, but then I'm almost close to declaring that only the first film and the spinoff novels from that count as canon these days ;-)

The Corellian Bloodstripe (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Corellian_Bloodstripe) - a fact I only know because I own original editions of The Han Solo Adventures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Han_Solo_Adventures), which (along with "Splinter of the Mind's Eye") are much cooler than all that later "Expanded Universe" bumf.

exactly. I enjoyed the later stuff, but the early novels were actually cool. Did like the way West End kept track of all the spin offs and kept it canon. Until the shoe salesman made them go bust :-(
