I didn't get it... until I recognised the portrait.

-- Steve's amazed at the cultural pervasiveness of this one film.

I don't recognise it. A youngish Charlie Chaplin maybe? (But the mustache is wrong.)

OK, everybody laugh at my ignorance.

That's Mandy Patinkin, with the hairstyle he wore in The Princess Bride.

The stickers are a clue: "Hello, my name is"

Like, "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Oh, now I get it. I've never seen the film, having kids put me off Disney films for life and beyond.* But do I know the catchphrase.
(And a guy named Mandy???? Were his parents Johnny Cash fans?)

*Of course, I'll now be told that The Princess Bride is NOT, despite the name a Disney movie. If so, at least I've been useful for giving people laughs today.

Not only is it not a Disney movie, it's one of the best films of the last 30 years.

It follows the *conventions* of a children's fairy tale, while basically not being one. It's hilarious and romantic and action-packed and eminently quotable. And it stars Cary Elwes and Andre The Giant, what's not to love?

Seriously, go rent it, or download it, or whatever. It's a GREAT film.

In addition to TWK's points, it was written by William Goldman. (Who also scripted Marathon Man, A Bridge Too Far, All the President's Men, Misery, Maverick, and other films. He also wrote the novelisation, which I actually read before seeing the film. Brilliant novel.) It may look like a typical kids' movie, but it's amazingly-smartly written in addition to well-acted and beautifully-filmed.

-- Steve has also remarked at how deeply this one film has penetrated into today's cultural consciousness... it may be worth viewing just to see how influential it was.

One of the new work posters headlines itself "Hello, I am <insert Spanish name, relatively rare in the UK>"

Every time I see it, I am exceedingly tempted to write "You killed my father. Prepare to die.", but I guess I'd be hauled before an awful lot of internal tribunals if I did that...
