Just so you know, before I clicked the embed, I figured it had something to do with Daleks, based on the parsing of the post title. :]

This is actually a sequel to the 1993 game? Coooool. I thought I was the only person who remembered that, but the web tells me it's now a "cult classic"!

I wonder if they'll have fixed the 'problem' where you could essentially brainwash everyone on the entire map. Even if they didn't have much in the way of guns, you could pretty much overcome everyone through shear weight of numbers. :)

.. and sheer weight of numbers too.

Ahaha, I never played Syndicate Wars, but in the first one I would get the mind control chip and possess nearly literally the entire map. Whenever someone tried to shoot at me, my mob of 100+ unarmed civilians and armed enemies would tear the other guy to shreds.

Exactly, there was nothing like seeing the crowd of people moving along with you. It was like being part of the army of villagers charging the castle in a Frankenstein movie. Hellaciously fun.

That was not a problem, it was just a viable strategy.

I lost track of how many hours I put into this. I specially loved playing co-op with my buddies.

hmm, that trailer was surprisingly cool, not sure how I feel about it now.

There's been a bit of an uproar about slapping the branding on what is essentially a FPS cyber shooter (Deus Ex clone) and I don't expect it to have a whole lot in common with the original bullfrog games.

It's supposed to have 4 player co-op though, so that could be fun.

Mostly though I'm expecting a cheap cash in, linear story line, generic shooter with a corp/cyber punk theme. Not really exciting

Story from Richard Morgan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Morgan_(author)), which is a good sign. His writing isn't my absolute favourite, but it's a very good fit.

Somewhere between Market Forces and Woken Furies would be about right, I'd say!

I'm curious, for sure, though if it weren't for my familiarity with the Syndicate aesthetic I'd be describing the design as bland. I just hope that, in the same way that we have indie Xenonauts to 2K's XCOM, we will get an indie something to EA's Syndicate. And I will like them both, provided they are good games.

("It's not fucking Syndicate if it's an FPS" - it's not fucking Syndicate if it's built in a 3d engine! It's not fucking Fallout if it's a tactics game/a top-down shooter/an FPS! It's not fucking Star Control if it has puppets/is a 3D shooter! It's not fucking X-COM if it's in space/play by email/a squad-based FPS/a rubbish 3rd-person shooter/a cover-based shooter! It's not fucking Civilization if it's on a console/Facebook/uses hexes!

I won't say I don't understand the upset but jeez, it's not like the corporate gaming industry never followed market trends before. Besides, when a franchise is resurrected after fifteen years, developers should hardly be expected to reproduce a game of an entirely different era... and no one is taking away the old titles, either. You can still play those games, astonishingly!

'Scuse the parenthetical rant.)

Looking back over what I just wrote, it's a tad unfair. What I find irritating is not that people are disappointed by corporate decisions like this - I too would like it if a franchise were brought back and a game was made in something closer to its original genre. Genre is, after all, a defining characteristic.

It's just the reactionary conservatism that gets me. If a game fails on its own terms, by all means lambast it. But to dismiss it because it isn't a thing it's not trying to be? Smells like gamer entitlement to me.

i like the old game better than the new game?

i want to see it in play before i make up my mind.

trailer is slick. hopefully the gameplay will be as well.

i think i still have the original games in a box somewhere. (persuadatron for the win!)

That fight scene

Where he punches the guy and yanks his legs to kick him in the face.
1:01-1:03

Yeah. That had better be in the game as in option.

And at 1:12 to 1:16 - the scene where he shoots both guards and waves to the camera

This is quintessential cyberpunk.

I can't say I'm enthused by what they've done with the music, but then the original piece many years ago. That and a love for hammerspace trenchcoats.
