I seem to recall hearing a similar story about a guy who used an live artillery shell to push his hemorrhoids back in (it was smooth, cold, and rounded) until the inevitable mishap.

I've heard that one, too. I have to wonder what was going through his mind when he decided that was a good idea. There have to be other objects that would work just as well for the purpose, without the potential danger of fiery death.

I mean, I'm not sure the ratio of "pain/discomfort relief" versus "could have blowed himself up" equals out.

Yeah, my impression is that people who show up to the ER with stuff up their butt tend not to be very good at risk/benefit analysis.
