Our friend [livejournal.com profile] leighdb has been liveblogging her first, spoiler-free, trip through A Song Of Ice And Fire

And I'm terribly late to this - I've been waiting for it for MONTHS and then I went on vacation and missed it when it happened last week - but she's finally hit That Chapter. You know the one.

And her reaction is priceless.

Go! Read!

Oh yeah. Sure Jaime is toast. Or is it a life for a hand?

If you haven't read the books and haven't seen my own spoiler-laden discussions, I'm not going to fill you in here. To-date spoilers are only a Google away if you want 'em.

Hahahahahah :) I remember my own reaction of hitting That Chapter. Remarkably much like hers.

You should at least give 'em a try. And then when you hit That Chapter (you'll know the one) you can post your reaction!

I am perplexed by the lot of you who read That Chapter and thought it would be a good idea to keep reading these fucked-up books.

... do you OBJECT to books where shit does not always go well for the Protagonistas? Or where the identity of the members of the Protagonista movement is uncertain?

Oh, not at all, but when that's shown to be the theme that the author keeps going back to because, hey, fuck you, that's why, then i'd rather read a book where all of the characters aren't either evil, stupid, or useless.

"No Country for Old Men" is an example of this technique being done right.

Not all of Martin's characters are evil, stupid or useless. It's just that "being good" does not inherently mean "will win".

I'm not opposed to bad guys winning. Heck, Richard III makes you root for him, and he's a total fucking asshole. Tyrion is the best character in the book, which made me want to see a whole lot more of him and a whole lot less of everyone else except Jon who has some potential. Everyone else... fuck `em. Drop `em in a well in chapter 2 and be done with it.
