Why yes, I *have* been playing this game too much.

So, first, the tool: The Skyrim Alchemy Helper

Stick in any ingredient, and it will pop out every recipe that ingredient can be used in, with which other ingredients. Sorted by *number of effects*, so you can pick for maximum awesome (also money and Alchemy training) or just so you can look through for, say, "fortify Health and give health" or "Fortify Archery And Sneak" or whatever it is you want.

Second, the stupid question: Hawks.

Hawk feathers are an alchemy ingredient.
Hawk beaks are an alchemy ingredient.
There are hawks. I have seen them flying around.
PRESUMABLY one can get these ingredients by killing the hawks, but HOW DO YOU DO IT? They're too small, far away, and fast to hit with a bow or a spell. I've tried tossing around Rabbit Chunks to see if they'll come down, I've tried chasing rabbits out into the open while the hawks are circling, I've even tried bouncing around like a bunny hoping they'll have some kind of size perception snafu and come attack me. Nothing - they don't react.

How does one hunt hawks?

But hey's actually hit a few? Good to know.

I've blasted them into next week with Shouts, I think, but I've never actually found a body. So I'm not actually sure if I hit 'em or they just left.

lightning spells might be better if they're in range. you don't have to time them. You can also use console command tcl and float up there. try my alchemy app http://rp.eliteskills.com/skyrim.html

I have nothing to add to this discussion, beyond to point out that my XBox Live dashboard has been entertainingly monochromatic black since Skyrim came out. I think I saw someone watch Netflix, once, since 11/11/11.

(...I'm playing Mass Effect there and Fallout on the PC, because priority.)

The Netflix was probably me, since I don't have Skyrim, and I was done with Bastion by 11/11...so lately it's been Netflix.

I really should dive back in, though. I have Bioshock 2 to finish, and then there are the Assassin's Creed games that have been piling up in my absence...

I watch DS9 every once in a while to break the monotony!

You can kill them

While watching the E3 demo and explanation, the dev guy said "And you see this hawk? I can kill this hawk if I wanted to."

Granted he did not try to do this. He was demoing the walk up the mountain outside of River(something). Riverdale?
But they say it can be done.

I'm sure it's possible! I just have trouble managing it regularly.

I found two videos at

And it looks like you hunt hawks by being bastard lucky/persistent.

There are a lot of hawks circling over the Solitude docks. (Enough that if you miss your intended target you still have a chance if hitting its neighbour.)

Their corpses float so you can easily swim and collect them when shooting at the docks.

Lead your shots slightly ahead of them, and make sure to draw the bow all the way back.

Crouch so that your bow is positioned more horizontal than vertical, so that it blocks less of your view near the cross-hairs.

They seem to have a larger hit box than the model indicates, or I've been very lucky when I tried.

The right click to zoom archery perk helps, and I assume the time slowing while bow zooming perk would too - though I haven't taken that one.

I've had up to three feathers from some of them, so you won't need to hit too many.

It's not about needing the ingredients for anything, so much as wondering *how to get them*. Since I was having an ass of a time hitting the things.

I've brought a few down. The "Eagle Eye" upgrade in archery is pretty crucial to hitting things in the air, if you don't have it already.
