Argh, dear stupid Steam: When presenting an achievement for reward, please to be either AWARDING IT AUTOMATICALLY if the user has done it already, or making it be something an experienced player can do again.

Because FUCK YOU I don't want to lose 2 hours of Bastion to get a "first 5 minutes" achievement that I can't get from here. I can't go back to redo that area without restarting the game, and restarting the game *loses my progress*. No multiple saves here!

EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] xyzzysqrl points out that there ARE multiple saves hiding in Bastion, inder Help And Options -> Profiles. So I just took the 5 minutes to get that one, because hey why not?

That is, for the record, only today's SECOND-WORST achievement. Which is, itself, an achievement. The worst being "Survive 10 minutes of Christmas Radio in Beat Hazard"

Ahhh, I was wondering whether that was at the start of the game.

I was a bit eh on the Psychonaughts achievement requiring either you to have a saved game around, or to cheat.

You could get to the required level in Psychonauts in an hour and a half to two hours if you tried. I started doing that, but after two hours was enjoying the game too much to rush it. So I cheated to get the cheev and saved my new playthrough for another, non-cheev hunting day!

Losing 30,000 ships in AI War... now that was a crazy one.

Whereas I'm planning to play through Psychonaughts with all the powers from the start, see what it's like and enjoy the story whilst not finding the game too challenging.

Oh, I see. I thought by "cheat" you meant "download a saved game from the steam forums". My bad. Enjoy your playthrough!

Under Help And Options in Bastion, there's "Profiles". Pick Profile 2. Now you have a separate save.

Huh, you got to the skyway first time? When I played through, I didn't get to the end and fell to the Bastion.

I pretty much decided to not give a shit about the gift things on Steam. I gave my two coal that I picked up to another guy on my list and proceeded to just play the games on my Steam list. And since most of them were on sale, it feels like I already won~

I like the challenges. Some of them are fun, and some of the prizes are neat.

I kinda gave up after my fourth consecutive coal.

Yeah that won't save. I rather hate the game so I'm tempted to shelve trying for the achievement.
I ended up writing a recommend on E.Y.E - it annoyed me that much.

Looking here (http://steamtreasurehunt.wikia.com/wiki/Winter_Objectives), apparently there's a couple of bugsploits to avoid the whole 10 minutes.

My current bugbear is the Toki Tori snowflakes one - I'm tempted to go through the unecessarily complex hack from the above link to get it. I mean, I'd just ignore it, but I've already spent a week's supply of swearwords on it...

But those involve getting the bad part (the music) without the good part (blowing up aliens).

I just put up with terrible music for 10 minutes. It's not like Beat Hazard Survival gets *hard* until the ~15min mark.

Couldn't you just, y'know, turn off your speakers for 10 minutes...?

Anyway, given my current rate of success, I'm think I'm not going to get too invested in earning them all. So far, I've got three vouchers and a bunch of coal. The vouchers are all for games that are currently on sale for greater discounts than the vouchers, and the coal I could trade in for another voucher, or keep for a lottery odds chance of winning something worthwhile.

Turning off your speakers makes Beat Hazard both dull *and* hard - the music cues you to what's going to happen pretty well. And without the music, it's boring.

I'm not going to get them all, certainly, but my rule of thumb is that if I already own the game (or want it) and the achievement will take ~10 minutes? I'll grab it. I've won a full free game (Aliens Vs Predator, but hey, free game) and a bunch of shots at the grand prize, and it's kind fun collecting these.

Ah, okay. I played BH once when I first got it, but didn't really get into it - I think it gave me a headache within minutes. Maybe I'll give it another shot, with some ameliorating substances at hand.

And yes, I concur with your rule of thumb, it's just that seeing what I've got so far, and calculating my odds at the grand prize, I don't think I'm going to bother jumping through the various hoops to use the hacks from that wiki.

Good for you for the free game - is it the new one? The original two were utterly awesome at capturing the atmosphere. Some years ago, I was playing the first late at night, with headphones on, in the dark. My wife woke up, came up behind me and tapped me on the shoulder to ask what I was doing, and learned that I could scream like a girl.

Yes, it is the new AvP. I still haven't *redeemed* it, but yeah, I won it.

Funny story!

I played the original and shared it with some friends of mine who I used to play card games (mostly Doomtown, sometimes Magic, etc) with in person.

I took the facehugger skittering sound and set it as track 5 on a mix CD.

I gave the CD to Our Host at the store we played at to put over the speakers.

I waited.

After 4 normal-seeming songs, the facehugger noise came on and my opponent JUMPED.

I got a free copy of the Orange Box, which I gave to my one of my Christmas hosts, along with a copy of Nation Red (which had been sitting around in my inventory for ages; I'd bought a four-pack, taken one for myself, and given two away but not the third).

I worry slightly that I'm introducing him to a life consuming malady, but hey, he's enjoying it.
