Shorter Alabama senator: "If we increase pay for teachers, then more people will want to be teachers. Teachers should get starvation wages so that only people CALLED to teach by God will want to do it"

At the same time, he defended doubling his own pay on the grounds that he's a senator, and they NEED to make enough that they're not tempted by bribery.

well, effectively, planet. because this is the only country in which i can even compete for a full-time teaching gig. if i could bring myself to sign up for year-long contracts teaching ESL somewhere else, my life would be made and i wouldn't complain at all. but i have the problem of being American, wanting to stay in America, and wanting to teach writing. the choices are: abandon everything and move across the globe, or not have a job.

Yes, yes he really did come up with that defense.

And that's when my null-logic headache spread to the entire front of my head.

It REALLY DOES make sense to pay legislators and regulation enforcers and police officers enough that they're not actively constantly looking for bribes in order to buy food.

One of the most common instantly-effective anticorruption measures genuinely is "pay more".

But that isn't exactly what's happening here.

Wouldn't that result in teachers taking bribes and atheists becoming senators?

Don't be silly. Teachers don't do anything important, so why would you bribe them?

Ow.

My brain just leaped out my ears and stormed off in a huff at the sight of this, screaming "there is just too much stupid! I'M DONE!"

Fun Cat Fact #6,743: Some cats are brighter than some senators.

My cat is brighter than this senator, and he occasionally gets lost in a three-foot-square corner of the living room.

Why doesn't anyone ever apply this logic to anyone else?

"The accounting staff is not getting a raise this year, but we don't expect any of them to quit, because they all just LOVE working with numbers!"

"We're laying off a quarter of the sales staff, but there shouldn't be any problem with morale, because the sales staff was all CALLED BY GOD to convince people to buy our stuff!"

We do it to artists, too, and boy is it annoying. "Selling out", and all.
