Hmm.. I haven't torrented much lately, since I kept picking up viruses.. But I am interested to see how this changes the way people torrent.

"What’s perhaps even more striking is that the greatest arch rival of a billion dollar entertainment industry is nothing more than 164 megabytes of text. Something to think about."

If they were smart, they would have done this from the start. But it's a service by pinheads for pinheads, so whatever.

Person 1: "Hey look! A working product, that you cannot get legitimately no matter the price!"
Person 2: "Wow, a product that is better in every way, that I would pay for, but I can't. All I can pay for is crapware that doesn't work, and is thus a product that I won't pay for."
You: "PINHEADS."
Persons 1 and 2: "Wow."

(More pointedly: The Pirate Bay has never, at any point, using either previous policies or current policies, committed a crime.)
((PS: US laws are both not universally applicable, and stupid.))

It is not a legitimate service. Its sole raison d'etre is to thumb its nose at media cartels and moronic copyright laws, which in itself isn't a bad thing but is decidedly the act of pinheads; for them to be held up as a cause celebre because of it (as they have been for years) is the act of pinheads.

If you think that torrent usage is some geeky, isolated thing then you are living in the last decade.

46 percent of US citizens have engaged in piracy, over 70% for the under 29 crowd. The spread between male and female is only a couple points. (http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2011/11/its-official-america-a-land-of-young-casual-pirates.ars)

I don't know where you got the idea that i suggested that it's a geeky, isolated thing, nor do i know why that matters.

Because the phrase "By [some non-small group] for [some non-small group]" is semantically bankrupt.

But apparently you define "pinheads" as "people under 29" so expecting meaningful word use from you might be unrealistic.

Semantically bankrupt? How quaint. And thanks for the cheap mind-reading attempt. While you're at it, can you guess my weight, too?

They stopped *running a tracker* years ago.

No longer hosting torrent files is different.

So they've been hosting torrent files to their inactive tracker for two years?

As I understand it: They've been hosting .torrent files to other people's trackers for two years.

Not terribly surprising. They switched to magnet links as the primary download source during the SOPA/PIPA fiasco, about the same time they changed their DNS to a non-US host.
