And the realisation is this: Fox News is just an attempt by Americans to copy a successful British thing - in this case, batshit tabloid journalism. And, like The Office and unlike, uh, all the other ones I can think of offhand but I'm sure there are some, the American version is waaaaaaay more successful than the original.

My, wasn't that encounter with the Basselope exciting! And when my life gets exciting, it's good to have the good folks at Mutual of Omaha to turn to and etc etc... /Marlin Perkins

Did they rerun the "I'll just put this turntable down with my nifty new abacus" Christmas gift strip yet? It's one of my all time favorites.

The odd thing is that the Telegraph isn't a tabloid.

my take on that pic is that the description should be "Casting for live action adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Witches now finished."

not sure if you've already seen this tabloid headline http://subsstandards.wordpress.com/2011/06/10/woman-in-sumo-wrestler-suit-causes-sub-to-wet-their-pants-over-lesbian-ex-lover-chocolate-jealousy-assault-story-and-triggers-nationwide-twitter-alert-over-mega-deck-tabloid-headline/

In tone and honesty it does not appear significantly different from The Mail or The Mirror or The Sun.

Tabloid does traditionally refer to the format rather than the content.

"Tabloid Journalism" has become a meaningful phrase, even when the paper is itself not in tabloid format.

Ahhh now here's the problem. The Torygraph has roughly the same content and bias as the Daily Fail, but generally presents itself as slightly broadsheetish - it's the paper for RESPECTABLE bigots. While the Sun is the paper for populist bigots and the Daily Fail is the paper for raging, frothing bigots who should be killed with fire

The interesting thing, IMO, is that the byline clearly spells out that witchcraft is not the threat to children: FEAR of witchcraft is what killed the boy. If only we knew where people were getting these crazy ideas about witchcraft running rampant...

Given who owns NewsCorp, this can't be a really big surprise.
