"Who is speaking up for the mothers who, under HHS mandate, have been falsely coerced into feeling that to be a woman means to have 'control' of their own bodies?"

No, really. He said that. Apparently, ladies, your belief that you are a person and not just a womb under the authority of your male owner is false and you've been coerced into thinking that. Luckily for you, though, there are a bunch of priests to help save you from yourself and your mistaken belief that you have rights.

Nitpick: SOME Lutherans. This guy is Missouri Synod; this is almost certainly not the ELCA position.

They're Missouri Synod, so I'm not a bit surprised.

(The university I work for is associated with ELCA, who are pretty mellow as these things go. They're the only Lutheran denomination I can reasonably work for—the others probably wouldn't hire me to begin with.)

A few years back, I was on the faculty executive committee at my university when the provost announced that the university president was retiring in a few years. She asked that all of us consider who among any upper-level university administrators we might know might be considered as possible replacements. She reminded us that one of the requirements to be president of this university is that the candidate be a full-fledged member of an ELCA denomination, or another Protestant denomination with which ELCA has full communion.

She then added, "Remember, that does NOT include all Lutheran denominations in the United States."

I grew up Catholic so I had no idea these divisions even existed but that right there told me an awful lot about the Lutheran Church in America.

Missouri Synod are the knuckle walkers of the Lutheran Church. The rest of them welcome Gays and are fairly enlightened.
