I just tried to start Assassin's Creed 2 Part 3, and, for the first time in months, my internet connection was down.

AC uses Ubi's legendarily crap DRM, the stuff that means if your internet is down, the game closes and you lose your non-online progress. I put up with it because I got the game at a stupidly good discount - for $5, I will put up with this shit, because my internet is five nines reliable . But anyway.

The game popped up and said "you're offline. You can TOTALLY play, but you can't play multiplayer and we won't track your achievements".

Stunned, I started the game, went to a merchant, refilled my consumables, and quit. I fixed the internet (yearly modem reboot, yay) and started the game again... and the changes I'd made to my save had transferred now that I was online.

Which is to say, Ubi's DRM acted SANE, not stupid. And let me play the game offline. And kept my changes.

This is huge.

Seriously.

Anyone with an X-Box feel like unplugging their internet and seeing if the same applies to Ubi's console DRM?

I used a crack on AC2's DRM, and it still worked fine with Steam.

I don't like Ubi's programming decisions, but I trust them to not be evil at me more than I trust most random crack sites. I just adjust the price mentally to account for the annoyance of the DRM before buying.

I believe they pulled the legendarily crap DRM from the Assassin's Creed line starting with AssBro, and patched it out of AC2.

This is excellent news!

My saved game for AC2 isn't at the end of the game, because I finished the game but then the Ubi manager crashed. Which meant it lost my entire session, synced my offline save with my last online save when I restarted, and wanted me to finish the game again. And I never bothered.

That's the last time I had a problem with it, so I didn't realise it wouldn't do the same thing in AssBro or ACRev.
