If you play board/tabletop games with lightweight paper/plastic figures, 1c coins are pretty good for weighting the bases to add stability.
For entertainment, I've been watching US/Canadian folk on discussion boards talking about all the HUGE PROBLEMS that will result from scrapping pennies, and contrasting with what actually happened in .au.
"And when the inflation rate jumps because prices are rounded up, will there be a call to roll out the guillotines? People are too stupid to deal with corrupt leadership." (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/last-canadian-penny-stamped-mint-copper-coin-192618487.html)
"all it means is that now your local shop will be rounding up the price to the next nickel. you don't actually think anyone's gonna round down do you? and what of the tax? if you're paying 13 percent tax on a on-dollar item, what do you think I just want to give them another 2 cents? they can go to heck lol"
"One good use for the penny, depending on your house insurance is to put it behind a blown fuse. Just like a new fuse."
(several more in the comments there)
"So what happens when you have 99 cents? and you need that penny to make a dollar. Makes no cents to me lol but then I am a proud USA living American.. " (http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/05/04/canadas-last-penny_n_1476664.html)
"You wingnuts actually believe anything will be rounded down? Not a snowballs chance in hell...... And how would you know to begin with, new price tags will read in even nickel increments. You seen the last of anything written as 99, 79, 49 cents, etc., gone like last weeks garbage........." (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/story/2012/05/04/mb-canada-last-penny-mint.html)
...hmm, I think I may have to add your journal for the bio-geekery.
I'd like to think the guy claiming you can use a penny just like a new fuse is trying to get other idiots to try it, and thus, lose everything they own in a fire so they'll stop worrying about pennies.
Hmm. I do like that interpretation, but I couldn't tell from context whether it was that or just plain idiocy. Certainly there are more than enough idiots out there willing to use pennies/nails/etc in place of fuses.
