Not sure the "Major Industry Identifier" means much these days. (How is American Express 'Travel and Entertainment' rather than 'Banking or Financial'?)

But yes, when occulting credit card numbers, always preserve the first 6 digits; that way, when showing the user details of their credit card, you can remind them which bank issued it (which is useful for people who have multiple credit cards).

When they started issuing credit cards, Amex was a traveller's cheque company. And they can't *re-issue* every card.

Yeah, hence "these days".

Still, if they'd cared about it enough, they could have issued new cards in a different range, which wouldn't have taken more than a couple of years to deprecate the old range.
