Steam's doing daily deals again, complete with change-every-8-hours "flash deals". For the next 4.5 hours, Fallout: New Vegas is $5, and the Ultimate Edition (with all the DLC - which you DO WANT) is $10.

Seriously, one of the best games in the last decade.

It really is the best game ever. I've played through at least twice and working on a third time.

It's one of the very few games where I've ever gotten 100% completion, every achievement, every ending.

In the end, I spent 20 minutes playing Beanbag Tag with a deathclaw to get the "heal 10,000 HP with food" achievement.

And I was shooting it with nonlethal weapons at the time!

(Seriously: Beanbag rounds in the shotgun to slow it down and keep the attacks down slower than the food-based regen, A TON OF FOOD-BASED REGEN, and 10,000 HP of healing went by pretty quickly!)

It so is. I made it through on hardcore--it took me a year, I am terrible at computer games--and now I am trying to play Fallout 3 and keep getting annoyed by all the things it can't do that New Vegas can and did.

Offline mode works fine if there isn't an update to apply, and you can escape those by turning them off unless you specifically need one, if you're aiming to play offline regularly. The "always-on to play at all" requirements are almost always specific-game-publisher crap, not Valve.

(Of course, for $5 I decided to put UP with the crap and get Assassin's Creed, and discovered that it's a really fun game. Enough so that I bought the sequels. It turns out there IS a price point where I will put up with always-on-requirements.)

Maybe I'm doing it wrong - when my net went down the other day I couldn't get near my Mass Effect games. So that's not steam, that's a Mass Effect thing?

Do not tempt me for a new game you! Vile temptation! Vile!

Uh... It Depends(tm).

If Steam launched in offline mode (with a "you are offline!" message), and Mass Effect launched, and you just couldn't see any of your saved games? That's Mass Effect's fault. That means they're using "cloud sync" to hide your saved games online (so you can get them from any computer) without properly leaving you a local copy. I didn't think ME did that, but I could be wrong - a lot of older first-gen-cloud-sync games did. [1].

If Steam launched but Mass Effect didn't (claiming you have to be online), that's Mass Effect, but I didn't think ME did that.

If Steam wouldn't launch because you weren't online, that's Valve. And that *usually* only happens if there's a pending Steam update that it can't apply offline, and that it's not smart enough to let you say "apply later" to. That's rare. That's not SUPPOSED to happen, although some people report it occasionally. for me, if my internet is down Steam starts without a hitch on both my machines, and lets me play any not-always-on game. And even Ubisoft's "always online" games are getting WAY better about letting you play offline and just not counting your stats or unlocking your achievements until you sync back up.

(Something like World Of Warcraft, of course? You're screwed, offline. But, again, that's not the same thing.)

What I'm saying is, I haven't had any problems, and my experience is the most-commonly-reported one, but it's not the only reported one.

[1]: Fallout 3, for example - I played for days, then decided I wanted to buy some DLC so I connected it to Live, and enabled Cloud Sync. I bought my DLC, started the game, and.... no saves.

It turns out the offline saves were only visible when NOT connected, and the online saves were only visible while connected. So the "fix" was to load the game offline, load my save, go online, and save, but it gave me a heart attack while finding out.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
*gasp* oooooooooooooooo

(pant pant pant)

Could you get that for BuxomDemon, pretty pleases? I'm at work for the next 8 hours.

I bought the Bethesda pack for a friend's B day. He was thrilled and planned on giving Lili the Fall Out 3 spare and all DLC - but you don't get duplicate copies that way for that company.
You can only get dupes for Half Life, Left 4Dead and Dawn of War.

(To clarify: Yes, I bought a copy for you. Drop me a line and confirm the exact username, preferably by them showing up on my list and being all "yes that is really me", and I'll deliver it.)

Oh I got everything "Vegas, Baby!"

The last DLC I wanted for $0.49! Too bad my poor hubby just bought the Ultimate Edition. Poor guy texted me a sad face when i told him and he NEVER uses emoticons.

Fallout, at its best, is absolutely worth emoticons.
