On the plus side, the backlash has been huge and immediate, and the GOP is pushing for him to resign from the race so they can stick someone else in. Course if this had happened next weekend after they didn't have that option anymore, who knows what they'd be saying. But at least they're still willing to say things that approximate the correct response. I fear soon they won't even bother with that.

He should not be allowed to backpedal, for the (at least) THIRD time about his views on women being slutty lying whores who totally file false rape reports in "messy divorces," to "punish the baby" in an unwanted pregnancy, and trying to narrow the definition of rape to "forcible rape" in cases where the rapist impregnated the victim, including in cases of incest.
