Dear David Briggs: The massive gap between self-reported donations and actual donations COULD be, as you posit, "self-deception" - but when you're surrounded by examples of people claiming to donate 10% of their income to charity and actually giving about $200/year[1]? It's far, far more likely that they were just lying.
