The Form 1 3D printer: Desktop stereolithography, $2500.

I'm not getting one, because I don't need a 3D printer and I don't want a 3D toy $2500 worth, but this is AWESOME. Because $2500 now means $500 five years from now.

They're getting less and less expensive, which is wonderful even if you don't intend to get one, because it makes it easier for other people and stores to get one.

I'm looking at the 3D printer languages myself (and trying to predict which one will be the eventual dominant standard). I don't need a machine, I just need to have access to one that can print my files.

True - it's kind of like glossy photo printers or poster-sized printers and cerlox machines. I don't need one, I just need Staples to have one.

But having my own would still be AWESOME.

STL is still pretty solidly accepted at all the commercial outfits I've looked at or worked with.
I also boggle at the idea of software that can't even manage the Wavefront OBJ format (what with not needing any surface properties, just geometry), but apparently this is something they don't bother with.

Any idea how it compares to the Makerbot Replicator 2?

Sadly, it appears to compare all too well -- as in, it's a straight-up knockoff.

However, I LOVE that 3D printers are getting so affordable, and will soon be available for home use... which means that I'm going to have to teach myself to use Maya or something eventually, because I want to Make Stuff!!
