I know!

It's almost like the Oglaf author, who is awesome, put more thought into it than Tolkien did.

It is not explained, however, how Oglaf got to be so amazing.

"Flatbear. They ride in on the northerlies."

Oglaf is funny, and so is this, but I have to mention that Tolkien did think about it. The skies over Mordor are swarming with wyverns - some with Nazgul riding them. They couldn't just fly in because the eagles were terrified of being eaten by giant dragon monsters.

After Sauron is dead, of course, all bets are off.

It's a valid criticism of the movie, because they never really establish what's keeping the eagles out. Tolkien can hardly take the blame for that, though, since he was dead and all.

Also a good criticism of The Hobbit movie.

Ehhh, not really. There's a difference between Gandalf being able to call the Eagles in to save him from certain death, and being able to call the Eagles in to help him make some dwarves obscenely rich.

The movie also goes further than the book does in making the point that Gandalf's friends think his plan is nuts and don't want anything to do with it.

Also the eagles say in the movie and in the books "we can't go near men because they think we're hunting their livestock. which we normally would be, so they're wrong, but not REALLY ..."

I presume that's a reaction to this one (probably posted here before, but what the hell, it's worth watching again):

I remember sitting in a hotel internet business room and dying of laughter the first time I saw the ninja wizards thing.

Heh. Hadn't seen that other catapult one before.

I love how much riffing the LOTR movies have generated (or suffered, as the case may be).
