Johnson appears to be one of those guys that's worth a lot more than the crappy scripts they attach him to. I think back to seeing him in The Rundown and, uh, that one family-ish movie where he's a quarterback that finds out he has a daughter, and he always seems like he's having fun in spite of the dumb lines they give him to read.
He was a top tier pro wrestler. He's used to selling THE MOST INANE LINES POSSIBLE, in an environment where if you aren't extremely entertaining in the process you don't make it big.

I've never understood why he stopped billing himself as The Rock. I guess he thinks using his real name sounds more professional, but it also sounds *significantly less awesome*.
I would far rather watch a movie billed as "Starring THE ROCK". I like him in movies anyway though, he does pretty decent work. Or entertaining work anyway.
That's possible, but he did bill himself as The Rock on at least a couple of his early movies, then changed to using his name when he moved to mostly being an actor. So that explanation sounds a bit strange to me.
He might have been under contract, or went through them to get the gig, or just wanted to use the name recognition, because who knew who Dwayne Johnson was back then?
FWIW, he's still The Rock on WWE, at least as of a couple of weeks ago -- Josh and Pam were watching an event at my house because I have comfy couches :)
