Isn't this the country that's making a heap of noise about how they're going to vanish beneath the waves due to climate change?
I mean, all I'm sayin' is, this sort of shit ain't exactly going to encourage people to invest in solar.
(And man, for all the problems I have with the US, that constitutionally stated separation of state and religion is possibly one of the greatest advances in human history).
Of course, it doesn't take religion to discount rape: Rape victims 'pressured by police to drop allegations' | Guardian -- [Women reporting sexual assaults encouraged by Met unit to withdraw complaints to boost detection rates, official report finds.]
Not that it makes the punishment for "fornication" any better (or in any way reasonable), but they claim (without details) that the "rape by stepfather" and "fornication for which she's being punished" are separate incidents.
I have not checked the replies ... so let's see what goodies the reading public of CNN has... oh! I got a Wiki Quote From the Wikipedia article on human rights in the Maldives: "Flogging is a punishment imposed upon women for extramarital sex. On 5 July 2009 an eighteen-year-old woman was sentenced to 100 lashings for sex with two men outside marriage; her pregnancy was used by the courts as proof of guilt. The two men were acquitted. Journalists reported that she fainted after the punishment was carried out and taken to a local hospital." People don't pass out from the pain of a ceremonial token lashing. They are full of it.
