I looked at the comments at all three places and found that the comments were restricted to two major themes:

What a great kid Wendell is and how we should all raise our kids like him.
What terrible little shits the cat-torturers were, complete with condemnation of a society that lets this behavior flourish.

Missing from the discussion: Wondering if the cat was asking for it by being so cute and easy to torture.

And it's by Amanda Marcotte. I was surprised to read the comments and find so many people agreeing with her. Whenever she writes an article for Slate, 90% of the commenters are MRAs accusing her of being a fat ugly slob that thinks all men are horrible rapists.

Yep, that's why I tended to stay quiet about Bad Stuff That Had Happened when I was younger, because I hate-hate-hated the idea that people would see me as permanently damaged goods, or guess that X is because Y happened, poor poor dear, now she's all wrong.

Pisses me off, it does. :(
