One of my favourite t shirts is from Berlin, tatty street souvenir stall, but it's got the East Berlin walk/don't walk man, jolly little bloke with a silly hat, the West German one is this boring austere thing. Nice image though, should've noticed where the line was before I scrolled down.

The Reddit thread about this mentioned that it's not actually just different colored streetlights, but that orangey light is actually from gaslamps. Wiki backs that up, as do news sources about Berliners complaining that their city government wants to change them to electric light.

So yeah. Gaslamps. That's why it looks different from the electric-lit side.

Nah, they don't have gaslamps in East Berlin. They're probably just old-fashioned lamps of some kind.
