Random thought - I recognize pretty much all of these, and could put a name to most of them without research. So, how many could your average C12th middle class Englishman recognize?

I'm thinking maybe a little over half. Probably less for a C12th peasant.

A lot of them have changed shape and colour due to selective breeding, that will add to the confusion (carrots spring to mind for one)

10. African cucumber
Native to Kalahari Desert, Africa
The African cucumber, horned melon or melano is a fruit that can be best described as melon with horns. It originated in the Kalahari Desert and is now present in California and New Zealand. The dark green pulp reminds one of bananas, limes, passion fruit and cucumber. It is often used for decorating food but also in smoothies and sundaes.

Thanks! Mildly surprised that they didn't include pitaya in the above picture (which is quite tasty).

You're welcome. Your question aroused my curiosity so I googled "asian fruit" and that pic showed up, even though it's not asian. Now I've a yen to try all those weird fruits.

This is gorgeous. Unfortunately, eating many of these objects would probably kill me--or at least make me wish they had for at least a few hours.

Well, at least I can appreciate the beautiful appearance of the fruit and veggies.

You've never had avocado, atafulfo mango, pears, other pears, peas, or artichokes?

I noticed the avocado glitch just before you posted (like, duh, I have eaten it!) and missed one artichoke, but the reddish or yellowish sort of pear -- nope, never had those. And those are fresh broad beans, I think, and I haven't eaten them either. And I don't even know what is atafulfo mango...

I will find it out!

The atafulfo is the yellow thing, dead center, third row from the bottom, directly below the corn.

It's a mango. Tastes pretty much like a mango.

Yeah, sadly, living in northern wastes of Europe means everything is picked way too raw and then sent over here in cool storage units. A friend of mine grew up in Brazil, and he said he never ate mangoes that had resin-like taste to them and having those over here was a huge surprise. Then again, he was able to pick 'em straight off the trees from his backyard. Truly, I envy that! :D

Really cool picture. There are lots I don't recognize, and I can't tell apart a lot of the citrus fruits.

Although I just realized the thing I thought was a tangerine is actually a pumpkin.
