The United States Federal Government: Dragged, kicking and screaming, into the Century of the Fruitbat.

Sadly, because the US isn't a competently-organised country governed by adults, it doesn't actually apply nationwide. Still, it means that where you CAN get married, you can get actually-married.

There are a LOT of violent, bigoted lunatics doing a crapload of kicking and screaming on this one, though. Stay safe, sane Americans.

Yay.

I mean, YAY! for the decision: I want equality.

But my heart sort of sinks to realize it was a 5-4 decision, instead of 9-0, as it would have been in a better reality. A case of "what the hell is wrong with you", especially highlighted by VRA decision.

But! YAY! for all my LGBT friends in the States! One step closer!

If it's any consolation, Scalia's dissenting opinion is full of delicious, delicious tears.

He [correctly, for once] cites the language in the majority opinion as fuel for future pro-gay rights rulings. Then whines about it because he thinks the job of people in black robes is to be water carriers for bigots.

Scalia was going to dissent no matter what, because so much of the argument in favour was DIRECTLY QUOTING HIM and using HIS OWN ARGUMENTS from Lawrence.

And there is NOTHING Scalia hates more than someone pointing out an inconsistency in his position and a logical consequence of his own argument, which means he will vote against anyone who does that no matter how hard he has to twist the logic.

Stay safe, sane Americans.

And vulnerable Americans with mental illness, too. :P (Yes, I know what you meant, but hopefully you also take my point...)

I do take your point. I am rhetorically willing to include many things in the category "sane" when it is used as the opposite of "violent, bigoted lunatic", but yes, my choice of words should be better and I'll try to remember that for next time.
