Important life lessons: In smalltown USA, if you do something that annoys a cop, even something perfectly legal, they will arrest you and kill your dog, slowly, in front of you.

Seriously, watch it up to the point where the dog jumps out of the car and then close that goddamn window as quick as you can. Not at all pleasant.

I'll admit that as an ardent Dog Person, I actually don't find fault with the officer who shot the dog. Whatever the impetus, the dog does appear to be an immediate threat at that point, and shooting a threat multiple times is standard procedure in stopping the advance of any potentially lethal threat.


I am, however, outraged with everything the police did that led up to there even being a reason for the dog to get involved.

After antagonising the dog, he approached it aggressively and encouraged it to misbehave *so that* he could shoot it.

And it's still doing play behaviour, not angry, despite that. It *play bows* right before he shoots it. It saw a bunch of Friend Humans wrestling with Best Human and wanted in, and didn't understand that these were, in fact, angry vindictive humans out to punish Best Human for impertinence.

I think this one's still pretty clearly "cops did everything wrong at every point".

I'm willing to believe that analysis, admitting confirmation bias in that I'm wholly unopposed to believing the worst of the whole set of interactions, and am predisposed to believe the best of dogs -- particularly those breeds maligned by the media -- but I'll also admit that I find it difficult to pull that much analysis (either way) out of the shaky, low-res video..
