"The mayor of the nearby town of La Quebrada, Yolanda Medina, told local radio that the festival organisers would respect the magistrate's ruling. However, she defended the tradition, saying the cats were specially bred for the occasion and only an handful were killed to be eaten."
Oh, well, okay then. So long as the cats were bred to be tortured and possibly consumed, it's not cruel at all.
There are many societies that think torturing an animal before killing it will instill magic powers in the meat—otherwise known as adrenaline. South Koreans that think they have to cause dogs endless pain in order to get first-class meat:
"Customers demand extreme torture and agonising pain so that at the moment of death massive amounts of adrenalin are coursing through the dog or cat’s body, making the meat tough; which is what they want. (http://pepismartdog.com/dogmeat/?p=211)"
Chinese, Filipinos, and other cultures also eat dogs and cats; in my book, since it's possible to not eat meat at all and be healthy—why even bother?
