Wow...never even heard about this. Apparently the Park Service was expecting precisely no one to show up, as there were no street closures or announcements of any sorts about it on any of the local media.

ETA: They (the Park Service) wouldn't be encouraging anyone to show up; when a cause that they realistically expect a few hundred thousand people to show up for happens, they make sure to announce times and road closures in advance since our traffic here is already so ... awe inspiring.

Awe as in "awe-full" as in the original sense, I assume you mean.

But I did giggle---yes, I wouldn't be surprised that the Park Service's reaction amounted to a pair of raised eyebrows somewhere.
